If you want to ride a cable car, consider walking a few blocks until the hill gets too steep and wait on the corner up there, instead of that long line at Market and Powell, although you don’t know what street entertainment you will be missing.

There is a kiosk there near the cable car turn around by the bank that sells public transit passes, including for the cable cars,.  I think they have 3 day and 7 day passes that are worth it.  Are you driving?  If you are flying, I strongly recommend you take BART from SFO, exit Powell Street Station, and you are at Union Square.  If your hotel is on a hill, get a cab  there.  There’s a shuttle/tram that circles SFO and takes you to BART, very very convenient.
